I find it interesting with today's reading how David was seemingly willing to go with the Philistines to battle against Israel. It is this battle which will be the death of Saul and his sons! Can you imagine if David had been with the Philistines as they destroyed Israel's army and king--and now he is supposed to be Israel's next king?
The pressure had finally gotten to David. In 1 Samuel 27:1 David thinks to himself "One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is escape to the land of the Philistines." No, the best thing he could do is rely on the Lord as he had been doing. But the People's Bible points out that, as far as we know, no psalms were written during his time in enemy territory. As is so often the case, it took disaster to wake David up. When he and his men returned to Ziklag after being denied by the Philistines the opportunity to fight against Israel, they found their homes burned and their families gone. The men wept to exhaustion and were ready to stone David, "but David found strength in the LORD his God" (30:6).
God is good. He promised David he would be king, and even when David forgot to trust in God, God was working all things to his good. We can all be thankful that God took good care of this ancestor to our Savior, and that he is watching out for us today and every day.
