Earlier this month I posted regarding the mention of the "covenant of salt" in Numbers. This piqued my curiosity, but at that particular section there wasn't much information in the commentaries. Today, there is helpful commentary from the People's Bible on Leviticus 2:13, "Season all your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of the covenant of your God out of your grain offerings; add salt to all your offerings."
"Unlike yeast and honey, which could lead to corruption, salt served to preserve food . . . To add salt to an offering was thus a reminder to the worshiper that he was in a state of preservation--an eternal relationship with God. God would never forsake him, and conversely, the worshiper had the constant duty to abide by the will of the Lord." The author then points to Matthew 5:13 where Jesus compares believers with salt.
