The story in today's reading of Saul setting out in search of his father's donkeys and ending up running into Samuel, who has been alerted by God that this would be Israel's first king--it brings up the question of just how much God is working behind the day to day events in our lives. The People's Bible says:
"Can anyone read these words and conclude it was mere chance that brought Saul to Samuel? Even Samuel must have been amazed at the way the Lord arranged their meeting. God told Samuel he would soon meet a young Benjamite who would be Israel's king-designate. Does God still use the circumstances of our lives to carry out his gracious purposes? Indeed he does. There is nothing in the Word of God, however, that suggests he arranges or predestines everything that happens in our lives. This kind of divine fatalism does not do justice to God. It is only in retrospect that we are able to see how God can take some of the most ordinary events of our lives and make them work toward unexpected advantage and blessing."
