Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

Faith In the Womb

Luke 1:39-45, about John the Baptist jumping in his mother's womb at the sound of Mary's voice, says something not only about physical life before birth but also about spiritual life before birth. Luke 1:15 predicted that that John would be filled with the Holy Spirit even before birth. Luke 1:41 says that at the time John leaped in the womb his mother was filled with the Holy Spirit. We know that the Holy Spirit works faith through the Word (Romans 10:17). Perhaps a mother's exposure to the means of grace (the Word and sacraments) also exposes her baby to the same hope that she has?

The ability of a baby to have faith seems strange to us because babies are so helpless, yet in reality all people are just as helpless. Colossians 2:13 says we were "dead" (you can't get more helpless than that), made alive only through Christ. This is another great example of God's grace.
