Interpretation Helps for John 1 and 2

• In John 1:51 when Jesus tells Nathanael, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man," he is saying that through him heaven would be open to them.
• In John 2:23-25 it says, "Now while [Jesus] was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. He did not need man's testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man." This is saying that regardless of what people would say about their faith in him, Jesus knew their hearts. For example, many people were impressed by the miracles and had their own agendas (earthly power, glory--as we'll see later), but Jesus knew those who trusted in his Word.
