In Matthew 11:2-6/Luke 7:18-23 when John the Baptist sends his disciples to ask Jesus, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" it is quite possible John was having doubts. Most of John's preaching was about the coming judgment. Since Jesus wasn't in judgment mode at this point, John may have become disillusioned (especially since he was sitting in jail while King Herod continued his immoral lifestyle). And although John was a great prophet, he was still a sinful human being.
Jesus reminds John of his work and then says, "Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." The People's Bible for Luke shares an interesting point. The Greek verb for "fall away" pictures a person stumbling over a stone (the NIV 2011 actually uses "stumble" in place of "fall away"). Elsewhere in the Bible Jesus is referred to as the stone over which some people will stumble (Isaiah 8:14, Romans 9:30-33), meaning they lose faith because they expected Jesus to be something different and cannot accept him as he is. Jesus is warning John not to do this.
