Psalm 128 is a beautiful reminder of how God richly blesses his people. Our labor will result in prosperity. Our spouses and children will be blessings to us. Life will be good. But we just got done reading Job, and the reality in his life and the lives of other believers is that things aren't always so picture perfect. Our jobs are often more burdensome than rewarding. Our families are often broken. Our days are filled with news of strife in the world, and our loved ones--and we--still die.
The difference for believers is our faith in God changes how we react to all this. So we don't like our job--it's still a job that brings in needed support, and there is always the chance to grow and move on to something better. We trust God is with us. Though each member of our family struggles with sin, through the redemption of Jesus we can forgive each other and grow closer. The strife in the world is a reminder of Jesus' promise to return, and death is a reminder of what lies beyond--heaven.
We've been reading about the very real, oftentimes broken lives of God's people all year. Yet in Psalm 128 we see the true joy that fills the hearts of believers. The difference is our faith in God.
