Romans 16:17-19 is one of the main sections of the Bible teaching us about proper Christian fellowship. It says, "I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I am full of joy over you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil."
The People's Bible points out that this isn't referring to people "who have simply become a little confused in their thinking and would be willing to correct their teaching if their errors were pointed out to them. No, they are people who may fairly be described as regularly and intentionally causing divisions and questioning beliefs. They have an agenda; they are teachers seeking to win others to their point of view."
As for how this is applied between church bodies, we as a church look at the official teachings of another church--whether they are true to the Bible--in order to determine if there is unity there or not. Where it gets trickier is determining where individual members of these church bodies are at in their understanding of the Bible's teachings. In some cases members may not know the official teachings of their own church, that there are errors. This is an outreach opportunity for us, a chance to discuss what God's Word says, to resolve any errors, and to hopefully unite with the fellowship of believers teaching the whole truth of God's Word.
