- In Philippians 1:21-26 Paul, currently a prisoner, says whether he lives or dies he has much to look forward to. All things considered he'd rather be in heaven, but if God chooses to let him live, it is his privilege to use his life in service to God.
- In 2:12 Paul encourages the Philippians to "continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling." He is not talking about works being required for salvation. He is talking about challenging oneself to spiritual growth and development. He is talking about keeping in the Word and regularly taking communion (the means of grace) in order to stay sharp against temptations.
- In 4:12-13 Paul shares the "secret of being content in any and every situation": "I can do everything through him who gives me strength."
What a different perspective we have as Christians. Instead of bitter lives of always wanting more, of struggling with all kinds of sin, of fearing death, we enjoy an overall sense of joy and peace knowing that even it times of severe testing, God is with us and provides all that we need. We are fulfilled in having meaning for our lives on this earth--to serve our God as messengers of his good news. The worst thing that can happen to us --death--is really the best thing that can happen to us because it takes us out of this world to our perfect eternal home with God.
