Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

Perfecting Christ?

Two different sections in today's reading mention Christ being made perfect. Hebrews 2:10 says, "In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering." And Hebrews 5:8-9 says, "Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him..."

Neither of these sections are saying that Christ wasn't already perfect or perfectly obedient. Rather, through his suffering Jesus painstakingly obeyed the Father's will and ultimately achieved the goal, becoming victorious as our Savior. According to the Concordia Self-Study Bible, through his suffering, Jesus completed (perfected) his incarnation, identifying with our anguish to become our sympathetic high priest.
