Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

The Error In Job's Friends' Message

In Job 4:6-7 his friend Eliphaz says to him, "Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope? Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?" The People's Bible author calls this sentence--"Who being innocent, has ever perished?"--the theme of Job's friends' speeches. This author also agrees with me in this thought: Which world has Eliphaz been living in? Many times people reap what they sow, but that is certainly not always the case. Most or all of us can think of examples of righteous people facing much suffering, like Job. Unfortunately his friends haven't realized this reality, so they will continue to "comfort" Job from this perspective again and again.
