Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

Zerubbabel

Haggai 2:20-23 says, "The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: 'Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I will shake the heavens and the earth. I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother. On that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Sheltiel,' declares the LORD, 'and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,' declares the LORD Almighty."

This is a Messianic promise. These words were never fulfilled in the lifetime of Zerubbabel, but Zerubbabel was in the line of the Savior Jesus (see Jesus' genealogies in Matthew 1 and Luke 3). Just like the Bible often refers to Jesus as "my servant David" (Ezekiel 34:23), God is doing that here with Zerubbabel. As we just learned in Daniel (2:44-45), Jesus' kingdom would crush the power of earthly kingdoms.
