Ezekiel 38-39 is a Revelation-esque section with a similar futuristic message for believers. The Concordia Self-Study Bible sums it up well: "The future restoration of Israel under the reign of the house of David (ch. 37), prefiguring the redemption of the spiritual Israel of all nations, will bring about a massive coalition of sinister powers to destroy God's kingdom. But the vast host that comes against Jerusalem will end up as dead bodies strewn over the fields of the promised land" (in other words God will see to it that the Church's enemies never overcome the Church).
A couple other details:
- "Gog" represents the forces of evil bent on destroying God's people. Magog is the land of these people.
- The coalition against God's people will be widespread. Ezekiel 38:5-6 highlights that opposition will come from the four corners of the earth. Ezekiel 39:9-11, where it talks about burning the enemy's weapons over seven years and how the burial of bodies would fill a valley, highlights just how many will be opposed to God's people.
Can you see this section being fulfilled today? I would definitely say so. As I stated earlier, Revelation will get into a lot more detail about the organized enemies of the Church. One verse that will be interesting to see how it plays out is 38:21 which says of these enemies, "Every man's sword will be against his brother, " in other words the coalition of enemies will even end up turning on itself.
