The Four Beasts and the Ram and Goat

The book of Daniel is incredible for its specific predictions of upcoming world events. The visions of the four beasts and of the ram and goat in Daniel 7 and 8 are examples of this.

In the vision of the four beasts the lion with the wings of an eagle is Babylon. The bear is Medo-Persia. The leopard with four heads is Greece (after Alexander the Great died his kingdom was split into four parts ruled by his generals). And the beast with iron teeth is Rome. The 10 horns of the final beast represent kings who would rule smaller states as Rome began to disintegrate. The boastful horn rising out of Rome is the Antichrist, identified for many reasons as the Roman Catholic papacy.

The vision of the ram and goat is similar. As the Bible says, the ram is Medo-Persia and the goat is Greece. The four horns represent the four parts of Greece ruled by Alexander's generals. Out of one horn would rise up another horn who would cause all kinds of trouble. This has been identified as Antiochus Epiphanes, a ruler who aggressively persecuted Jewish believers in an effort to erase their religion from the land. In 8:23-25 the interpretation of the horn as Antiochus Epiphanes gives way to a second meaning. Antiochus Epiphanes is actually a type of Antichrist. These verses again point ahead to a later time where a leader who stands against God will cause trouble for God's people.

For more details about the interpretations of these verses, I recommend reading especially the People's Bible commentary on Daniel. Very good stuff.
