According to the People's Bible, Nebuchadnezzar's 90 foot tall statue may have represented the imperial power of Babylon or the country's gods. The statue was most likely carved wood covered with gold plating. Some have criticized that the statue would have been disproportionate--too tall for its width--however, the 90-foot dimension may have included the pedestal on which the statue was mounted (in fact, archaeologists discovered in one of the mounds of ancient Babylon a brick platform 45 feet square and 20 feet high).
The reason for the event where everyone was to bow to the statue might have been to impress upon the thousands of prisoners of war in Babylon that the Babylonian gods were superior.
