The Prophet

The Concordia Study Bible notes that the prophet promised by the LORD in Deuteronomy 18:15-19 refers to a series of prophets and ultimately the Messiah. The Jews of Jesus' day saw this as a Messianic prophecy, as they quizzed John the Baptist about being the Christ with "Are you the Prophet?" (John 1:21).

    This comment really goes with the readings from both the 19th and 20th. It is funny how things strike you differently each time you read the Bible. I have read these sections before in my lifetime, but it really struck me today for the first time how God really wanted to strike home with the Israelites that He was the provider of all their needs. The idea of coming to the "place where his Name dwells" with the firstfruits of all that you grew or produced and sitting down with your family to have a feast of celebration in God's presence - with HIM - is really a wonderful concept. Sometimes we look at the Old Testement laws the Israelites as having been very restrictive, no fun! But in this case, what a great idea and what a moving spiritual event this must have been. It is something we should all remember and have in mind when we bring our offerings.

    I agree that all of the attention to detail really shows God's love for his people. This thought struck me a couple days ago when we were reading the laws about having no other gods. Many of these laws were so strict as to prevent even the slightest tainting of God's children by those who have turned away. For example, if even a family member privately told you "Let's worship another god," you were to eliminate that person.

    It's like they say about kids knowing their parents love them when there is discipline. The many laws to prevent God's children from falling from him show he REALLY cared, he really is a jealous God for us though we don't deserve it. It's cool to see.
