I was curious about a line in Numbers 35 about measurements of land for Levites outside a town. Verses 4-5 say, "The pasturelands around the towns that you give the Levites will extend out fifteen hundred feet from the town wall. Outside the town, measure three thousand feet on the east side, three thousand on the south side, three thousand on the west and three thousand on the north, with the town in the center. They will have this area as pastureland for the towns." I'm not sure how the People's Bible author knows this, but he says the first 1,500 feet are for tilling and the rest, going out to 3,000 feet, are for grazing.
More interesting is what the People's Bible says about the reason for these towns. It was to spread the Levites throughout Israel so they could be a "yeast exerting a beneficial influence on the people everywhere."
