Seeing God's Face

In Exodus 33:11 it says: "The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend." Then in verse 20 when Moses asks God to show him his glory, God says he will do that, "But you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live." I was always confused by this. Did Moses see God's face or not? The key is the second part of verse 11--it clarifies the first part: "face to face..as a man speaks with his friend." So the speaking to God "face to face" is a figure of speech to indicate the kind of relationship God had with Moses.

    I read the verse that described how God shielded Moses with his hand as he passed by several times because it was so striking to me. God talked to Moses one-on-one as a friend to a friend and allowed him to see his glory. But he protected him from seeing his full glory, which would result in certain death. What a beautiful picture!
