Amaziah's Idolatry

How strange that after God gave him success over Edom, King Amaziah brings back their idols to worship as his gods. Why? The People's Bible explains, "Amaziah's idolatry may have been due to a logic common among superstitious and heathen rulers of that time. If a nation or tribe suffered defeat, the idea followed that their gods had turned against them and had smiled upon their enemies. And if a nation's gods had helped that nation's conqueror, it only made sense for the conqueror to acknowledge their help and to keep them contented. So ancient rulers would often carry off the idols of vanquished people and worship them, just as Amaziah did here."
