In one of the editor's commentary sections today he says, "[Israel and Syria] draw together in an unusual alliance and even call upon Judah to join them. When Judah refuses to become involved, Syria and Israel turn against Judah in an effort to force her support." You wonder how he draws this conclusion from the Bible text that follows, which only says, "In those days the LORD began to send Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah against Judah."
Actually the Bible doesn't seem to say directly that Syria and Israel were attacking Judah in order that Judah would join them against Assyria. Instead that seems to be the assumption of several of the commentaries I checked because these two countries are allies fighting against Assyria and, since the Bible does mention them trying to overpower Judah (see 2 Kings 16:5 and tomorrow's reading of Isaiah 7:6), that must be the reason.
