Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

The Punishment of the Prophet

1 Kings 13 tells about the prophet of God who proclaimed judgment on Jeroboam being tricked by a false prophet who invited him to dine with him. When the prophet told the false prophet that God had told him not to dine with anyone, the false prophet replied that he actually had a message from God that it was okay after all. When the prophet gives in, God sends a message of punishment that is quickly fulfilled.

It seems the lesson in this is to test all so-called teachings about God's Word against what we know to be God's Word. If the prophet was told directly by God one thing, he should have known this other prophecy was false because it conflicted with the Word of God he was given. His giving in to the invitation to dine was actually a display of unbelief (however temporary) in God and his message.
