God definitely gave the Israelites adequate warning of the coming destruction by Babylon. It seems Jeremiah's message is as clear and urgent as possible: "Flee for safety, people of Benjamin! Flee from Jerusalem! Sound the trumpet in Tekoa! Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! For disaster looms out of the north, even terrible destruction" (6:1). Not only is his message clear, but Jeremiah repeats it again and again. Unfortunately the people are described as having eyes buy they do not see and hears but they do not hear (5:21). "These people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone away" (5:23).
As obvious as God's message is, the unbelieving seem frustratingly oblivious. As we work to share God's Word like Jeremiah, let us not become frustrated. God gives us the privilege of sharing his Word, and whether it falls on hardened hearts or actually has an effect, our "sowing of the seed" is God's will. (See also Matthew 13:1-23.)
