I really like the drawn-out illustration in Isaiah 44:12-20 of just how foolish it is to worship idols. Here is a guy using the same block of wood for the fire--to stay warm and to cook his food--as he uses to create his god. Today people typically don't literally worship objects, but if you consider that anything given first place in one's heart is his or her god, then how much better are the common false gods of today--self, money, things, popularity, etc.?
Are any of these reliable? Regarding trust in ourselves--although we feel invincible some days, other days aren't we scared of just how life is playing out? And money seems to make us happy at first but it can't prevent troubles--even the pleasures it provides get old. Popularity? Since we're all sinners, friends can unfortunately be fickle; when you need them most they aren't there. During these hard times how are any of these modern day gods better than a block of wood? They are worthless.
Worshipping false gods is always extremely foolish considering we have a true God who created us and who loves us so much that even as we stray he has worked through the entire history of the earth to help us see his love and trust him. He is all powerful and there in every situation.
Then, as now, the only true God is the one who is hardest to physically see, strangely enough, but we have faith in his presence and strength.
