Jesus, Our Prophet, Priest, and King

The Bible teaches that Jesus fills the roles of prophet, priest, and king. Today we see him described as king and priest. Jeremiah 33:17-18 says, "For this is what the LORD says: 'David will never fail to have a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel, nor will the priests, who are Levites, ever fail to have a man to stand before me continually to offer burnt offerings, to burn grain offerings, and to present sacrifices.'"

How can this be? King Zedekiah would be the last earthly king Israel ever had. The temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D. Jesus is the descendant of David who rules forever and ever. And he was the ultimate sacrifice for sins who continues to mediate on our behalf (the book of Hebrews, particularly chapters 4-10 go into much greater detail about Jesus as our high priest).

The result for us? Verse 22 says, "I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars of the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore." As the People's Bible says, thanks to Jesus, "all who believe in Christ are the descendants of Abraham (Genesis 22:17). All who believe are kings, for they rule with Christ. All who believe are priests, for they approach God covered with the righteousness of Christ. All are priests, for they offer sacrifices of lips and lives made new and perfect in the blood of the Lamb."
