Today we read how, with things looking pretty dire, King Zedekiah calls on Jeremiah to let him know what the Lord says once more. Jeremiah relays that if the king surrenders things will go better for the king, his family, and the country than if he holds out. Jeremiah shares, "If you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD has revealed to me: All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you: 'They misled you and overcame you--those trusted friends of yours. Your feet are sunk in the mud; your friends have deserted you.'"
The Concordia Self-Study Bible says that "women in a conquered king's harem became the property of the conquerors." On the way out these women would basically mock King Zedekiah, sharing how the officials and false prophets whom he always relied upon were wrong. Too late he would realize the one he should have been listening to was Jeremiah.
I found the reference "your feet are sunk in the mud" to be ironic given that Zedekiah's officials recently threw Jeremiah into the muddy cistern.
