Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

"A Woman Will Surround a Man"

Jeremiah 31:22 has the mysterious line, "The LORD will create a new thing on earth--a woman will surround a man." The footnote says "surround" can also be translated "seek" or "protect." A couple of the commentaries suggest this may be referring to Israel finally repenting and seeking God. I personally like the People's Bible interpretation that this may refer to God coming to earth as a man conceived in a woman. It seems to fit the context. God says he will "create a new thing," which often is a hint of Messianic promise. Also, this section of Scripture is about the restoration of Israel (God's people, his Church). Finally, I wonder if the leading verse of the section isn't a cue to put the reader on the right track. "A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more" is one of the prophecies of the Christ-child era (see Matthew 2:13-18). What do you think?
