In Acts 12:13-16 there is a funny scene where Christians have gathered to pray for Peter, who as far as they know is days away from being executed. God answered their prayers with a miracle, and Peter was actually knocking at the door. Rhoda the servant girl went to the door, but when she saw Peter she was so excited she forgot to answer it, instead running to tell everyone. People couldn't believe it, and when she insisted they said, "It must be his angel." What did they mean by this?
The commentaries say this reflects the belief that everyone has a personal, guardian angel (the idea of angels watching over us is biblical--see Matthew 18:10 and Hebrews 1:14). For some reason they also believed that these angels would occasionally show themselves and that they would resemble the person under their care.
