Statement to the Daughters of Jerusalem

What did Jesus mean in Luke 23:27-31 when he said to the women who were weeping for him, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' Then "'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!' For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

He is referencing the coming siege of Jerusalem by the Romans that would take place 40 years later. At that time it would be better to be childless than to see all the suffering that would take place. If people treat the Messiah this way, how much worse will things be when the Messiah is no longer with them and they now are suffering for their rejection in the dry period?
