"Save Yourselves"

In Acts 2:40 Peter tells the crowd on Pentecost, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." That makes salvation sound dependent upon oneself. The People's Bible explains, "'Be saved' would be a more literal translation than 'save yourselves,' and it would help us remember that salvation is entirely God's gift. It is not something we accomplish or contribute to. How could they be saved? Peter had already told them (verse 38)."
