Join the Daily Bible Challenge!

Three easy steps to participate:

1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.

2. Read the daily reading.

3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

Interpretation Helps for Genesis 25-26

A couple notes of clarification from today's reading of Genesis 25 and 26:

  • In 25:6 when it says Abraham "gave gifts to the sons of his concubines," by "concubines" it is referring to Hagar and Keturah. Especially with Keturah--although in 25:1 it calls her a "wife"--both she and Hagar were considered of secondary rank to Sarah, through whom God's promise was being fulfilled.
  • In 26:1, 26, the Abimelech and Phicol mentioned are not the same men as in the similar account in Genesis 21:22 since it is now 60 years later. Abimelech may be a family name and Phicol was either a family name or an official title.
