Judges 2:10-11 says, "After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals." Wow, that fast! The previous generation had heard the pep talks of Moses and Joshua and enjoyed the fulfillment of arriving at the Promised Land, and yet Israel's relationship with God died with them. That quickly. And it's not like the next generation simply forgot about God--they all out denied him and served idols!
I think about the "passing of the torch" from my parent's generation to mine and I have been surprised by how many Christian friends have fallen away. Despite their Christian families, going through Christian schools, discussing things based on common values, going to church and chapel services together--at some point they started to drift away. We as Christian family members, friends, and coworkers can't be content to assume everything will be all right with fellow Christians. We have to be intentional in encouraging each other in the faith (Hebrews 10:24-25).
I'd love to hear any of your observations on why our Christian acquaintances are falling away and what we can do about it.
