Another Rash Vow
About a week ago we discussed the rash vow of Jephthah that if, given a victory, he would sacrifice whatever walked out his door. This turned out to be his daughter. He took the vow very seriously and apparently went through with his vow to sacrifice his daughter. I had mentioned how, in my opinion, he should have just repented rather than pile trouble upon trouble. So it was noteworthy today how Saul made a rash vow that would have had Jonathan dead if the men of Israel hadn't interceded for him (1 Samuel 14:37-45). I'm sure God was not pleased with Saul's rash vow, but we know he had big plans for Jonathan (we'll see this in upcoming readings). What a waste it would have been if Saul had gone ahead with his vow.
