Join the Daily Bible Challenge!
Three easy steps to participate:
1. Purchase The Daily Bible. The best price is online, but it is also available at local Christian bookstores. I recommend hardcover.
2. Read the daily reading.
3. Optional: Return to this site to discuss the readings (consider bookmarking this site so you can easily find it each day).

The Brother of Goliath
2 Samuel 21:19 is confusing because it talks about Elhanan killing Goliath the Gittite "who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod." We know that David killed Goliath--this same Goliath with this same type of spear (see 1 Samuel 17:4-7). 1 Chronicles 20:5 has a parallel passage that clears things up--Elhanan actually killed Goliath's brother. So there must have been an error in transmission somewhere; the footnote to 2 Samuel 21:19 in our Bibles pointing to the Chronicles passage is more accurate. The latest NIV translation (2011) of this verse makes this correction and changes the footnote to "Hebrew does not have the brother of."
