Psalm 23 is such a popular section of Scripture that it's easy to breeze through it, so I tried reading through it a little slower to think about what it's actually saying. I was kind of curious about the line "He guides me in paths of righteousness." The People's Bible says, "He guides them [the sheep, his people] in the paths of righteousness, which lead to eternal life. These paths of gospel righteousness are not our own righteousness and good works but the way to eternal life opened by Christ's righteousness. The Good Shepherd also guides us in paths of righteousness when he gives us the guidance and strength to live Christian lives that are pleasing to him."
The key word to me is "guides." Christ leads; he is the way to righteousness. And he gives us his Holy Spirit to help us see that and to be compelled by his love to live righteous lives.
