We just read about David returning to Jerusalem where he appoints Amasa head over the army instead of Joab, maybe because of Joab's killing of Absalom. Then Joab tracks down Amasa and stabs him in the belly, leaving him wallowing in his own blood for all the soldiers to look at. What's shocking about this is that Amasa is apparently Joab's cousin. See 1 Chronicles 2:13-17 where it points out how David's sisters (or maybe half sisters?) are Zeruiah, mother of Joab, and Abigail, who is the mother of Amasa. That makes Joab David's nephew, also somewhat surprising given the difficultly David has in managing Joab.
A couple of the commentaries confuse me a little bit, though, because they talk about David's sisters being step-sisters. I don't see how they know that. Does anyone know the background there?
