Uriah the Hittite

2 Samuel 23 ends with a list of David's mighty men. All of these are great warriors and all of them men of real character. Some or even most have been at David's side since before he was king, when he was barely hanging on during his flight from Saul. Some even risked their lives to get David a drink of water, as we saw today. But the real shocker is the inclusion of Uriah the Hittite, the husband of Bathsheba--not because he wasn't a mighty man of great character; we saw in his dealing with David how Uriah wouldn't even think about enjoying the comforts of home while his fellow soldiers slept on the battlefield. No, it's a shock because this man Uriah whom David betrayed to his death in order to steal his wife was one of David's most faithful supporters. It really helps you see how terrible this sin was in so many ways, and it's a eye-opening warning for all of us to always be on our guard against temptations which end up doing so much damage to the people God has put closest to us in our lives.
