No Such Thing as a Free Lunch

Proverbs 23:1-3 is a little confusing so I thought I'd share what the People's Bible commentary says. The verses say, "When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. Do not crave his delicacies, for the food is deceptive."

To summarize the commentary--basically there is no such thing as a free lunch. If a ruler sets a meal before you there is an ulterior motive. The ruler needs something from you and if you eat you will be in the position of indebted guest. The proverb is stating that you should be wary of these situations and if you can't control yourself (in this case with the food "if you are given to gluttony") then "put a knife to your throat," or stop yourself!

A broader message beyond this specific situation mentioned of dining with a ruler would be "don't lose sight of your Savior amid the tinsel and glitter of worldly pleasures."
