Wounds from a Friend

Proverbs 27:5-6 says, "Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses." I thought this was worth highlighting because it is definitely our culture today to "live and let live," to avoid any criticism of loved ones that might make the situation feel awkward. But we have to look at the big picture. For the time being it might be a challenge to correct someone but in the big picture it is purely love that guides this action--concern that a friend is going down a path that will destroy his or her life on earth or even their eternal life. The Proverbs have so far taught us two other things that should give us confidence acting in this way: 1) a wise man can accept words of rebuke (Proverbs 19:20), 2) discipline is a good thing which makes us stronger (Proverbs 13:18). And can it ever hurt to get into a spiritual discussion? These tough opportunities are some of the best we get to talk about sin and the Savior. May we not pass a single one up!
